Accutane (isotretinoin) is one of the most powerful acne treatments available, especially when other options haven’t worked. It tackles breakouts at the source and can deliver lasting, life-changing results.

Deciding between standard dose and low-dose Accutane should be a collaborative process between you and your healthcare provider.
Factors to consider include...
Severity of acne
Previous treatments and their effectiveness
Treatment timeline preference
Cost considerations
Overall health & any pre-existing conditions
Your healthcare provider will assess these factors and recommend the most appropriate dosage based on your individual needs and circumstances.
Starting at $20/month
Low-Dose Accutane
18-24 months treatment

Best for mild to moderate acne
Gradual results
Milder side effects
Medication as low as $0 with insurance
Slower improvement, but still leads to long-term acne reduction
Starting at $40/month
Standard Dose Accutane
6-12 months treatment

Best option for moderate to severe acne
Faster results
Side effects more common
Medication as low as $0 with insurance
Clears faster, also resulting in long-term acne reduction
Off-Label Notice: Low-dose isotretinoin is considered an off-label use of the medication. While isotretinoin is FDA-approved, the agency has not specifically approved lower-dose regimens for acne treatment. Licensed healthcare providers, however, may prescribe medications for off-label uses when they determine it is safe and appropriate for a patient’s individual needs.
Off-label prescribing is a common and accepted medical practice, often supported by research and clinical experience. Honeydew providers may recommend low-dose isotretinoin when, in their medical judgment, it is the best approach for a patient’s unique history, symptoms, and treatment goals.

We now have over 40 years of research on this medication, based on millions of patients who have taken it. The latest studies have debunked a number of side effects that were previously attributed to Accutane. You are likely to experience some side effects (e.g. dry lips), but serious side effects are extremely rare.
Read the FDA’s comprehensive list of side effects here. You can also read more about Accutane’s safety and modern research findings on Honeydew’s blog.
At Honeydew, you have access to your care team 7 days a week with unlimited chat in case any side effects come up (vs. once every 30 days at an in-person doctor’s office). Additionally, we work collaboratively with your other doctors, like your primary care physician or mental health provider, to ensure you get the best care.
IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION FOR ACCUTANE® (ISOTRETINOIN): Accutane® must not be used by patients who are or may become pregnant. There is an extremely high risk that severe birth defects will result if pregnancy occurs while taking Accutane in any amount, even for short periods of time. Potentially any fetus exposed during pregnancy can be affected. There are no accurate means of determining whether an exposed fetus has been affected. Accutane, also known as isotretinoin, is a powerful medication used to treat severe acne, treatment-resistant moderate acne, and acne that causes scarring or psychological distress
Standard dose Accutane is associated with more intense side effects like severe dryness of skin, lips, and eyes, nosebleeds, and joint pain. Low-dose Accutane typically results in milder side effects, such as mild dryness and less severe muscle aches, with a reduced risk of more serious issues like vision or hearing changes.
Low-dose Accutane generally has a more favorable side effect profile. It is associated with a reduced likelihood of common issues like dry eyes, nose, and lips, as well as a lower incidence of muscle aches and a decreased risk of more serious side effects such as vision loss or mood changes.
The Accutane purge is essentially a flare-up of acne that occurs shortly after an individual begins taking isotretinoin. This worsening of acne is a typical and expected part of the treatment process. The Accutane purge typically follows the following timeline:
