Spironolactone targets the root cause of hormonal acne ā not just the surface.
It works by blocking the hormones that tell your skin to produce excess oil, helping to keep pores clear and breakouts at bay. By calming this hormonal signal, Spironolactone helps prevent clogged pores and stop new blemishes before they start.
The result? Clearer, more balanced skin that lasts.

Stops androgens from signaling oil glands to overproduce sebum.

Less hormone driven oil buildup means less fewer breakouts.

Addresses the hormonal imbalance behind stubborn, treatment-resistant acne
Spironolactone can be uniquely effective for individuals whose acne has been resistant to other forms of treatment. It provides a targeted, physiological solution to a hormonal problem. The ideal candidate for Spironolactone therapy is an adult woman who exhibits classic signs of hormonal acne.
These signs include:
Acne concentrated on the chin, jawline, and neck.
Breakouts that flare cyclically, often before or during menstruation.
Deep, tender, or cystic inflammatory lesions.
Oily skin that persists despite a consistent skincare routine.
Acne that has not responded adequately to topical treatments or oral antibiotics

Like all medications, Spironolactone has potential side effects. However, they are generally dose-dependent and often manageable. The most common side effects are related to its diuretic and hormonal properties and may include:
A less common but more serious side effect is elevated potassium levels in the blood (hyperkalemia). This is why your provider may monitor your potassium levels. Itās also why you may be advised to avoid high-potassium salt substitutes while on the medication. Most patients tolerate Spironolactone very well, and your provider will work with you to manage the dose in a way that maximizes results while minimizing these potential side effects.
No, Spironolactone is not prescribed for men to treat acne. Its anti-androgen effects can lead to unwanted side effects like breast growth (gynecomastia) and other hormonal disruptions.
No. This is a critical safety point.
Spironolactone is contraindicated in pregnancy because of its potential to interfere with the normal sexual development of a male fetus. You must use a reliable form of contraception while taking this medication and should stop taking it if you are planning to become pregnant.
Indirectly, yes. By preventing new, deep, inflammatory acne lesions from forming, Spironolactone is one of the best ways to prevent future acne scarring. However, it does not treat existing scars. For atrophic (indented) scars or significant textural changes, other treatments like topical retinoids, chemical peels, or in-office procedures would be necessary.
